Southeast Asia is undergoing one of the most significant automotive transformations in the world. What was once a region dominated by conventional internal combustion engine vehicles is rapidly becoming a hotbed for electric vehicle adoption, manufacturing, and supply chain development.

In the first half of 2026, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) formed 21 percent of car sales across ASEAN-6 countries – up from just 12 percent a year earlier. Across individual markets, the story is even more striking: Singapore posted a 62 percent BEV market share, Vietnam reached 35 percent, and Indonesia and Thailand ranged from 22 percent to 30 percent BEV sales penetration. Industry analysts forecast ASEAN passenger EV sales to rise from 419,547 units in 2025 to nearly 690,000 units by 2030, and further to 916,997 units by 2035, pushing EV penetration to 22.7 percent of passenger vehicle sales.

The ASEAN electric vehicle market is expected to grow from USD 4.55 billion in 2025 to USD 5.99 billion in 2026, with forecasts reaching USD 23.58 billion by 2031 at a compound annual growth rate of 31.55 percent. With the region's total population exceeding 704 million and relatively low vehicle ownership per capita, the growth runway is substantial.

But this rapid growth brings a fundamental shift in demand – particularly for the chassis and suspension components that underpin every vehicle on the road.

The Policy Shift: From Import Reliance to Local Production

One of the most critical developments reshaping Southeast Asia's automotive landscape is the region-wide pivot from import-dependent EV adoption to localized manufacturing.

Thailand, the traditional automotive manufacturing hub of ASEAN, is pursuing its "30@30" policy – aiming for 30 percent of all vehicles produced in the country to be EVs by 2030. Malaysia has introduced stringent conditions for fully imported EVs while encouraging local assembly (CKD) with requirements that key manufacturing processes be completed domestically.
